Happy Birthday USA

If you read this blog with any regularity, you know that I am a grocery store snob of the worst kind.  I love grocery shopping and I want my shopping experience to be relaxing, entertaining and stimulating to all of my senses.  The H.E.B. grocery chain that I grew up with in Corpus Christi, Texas has managed to make that happen for me on a regular basis.
Oh sure, there are those special gems around the country, The Whole Foods in Austin, QFC in the Pacific Northwest, and any grocery store in Asheville, NC.  But H.E.B. has their crowning glory, Central Market and then they have their higher end regular stores (I think they are H.E.B. Plus).
Anyway, we manage to get to a really good H.E.B. when we are in Laredo, McAllen several other cities in Texas.
So to celebrate the 4th of July, I decided to get a watermelon, that most ubiquitous of summer treats.  Now, dealing with a watermelon in the truck with no space, no utensils and no major fridge space was daunting.
Then I saw this beauty . . .

This darling thing called to me with the siren song of "Heirloom Produce"  It also promised to be "Seedless" and "All Heart".  How could I possibly resist?  I am showing it next to my coffee cup so you can see it in it's compact glory.
Seriously, how cute is this?

We had some time to pause this afternoon and I was able to spend the time it takes to cut and portion fruits and veggies for us.  Imagine my delight when I cut this fruit open and this was what I saw.

Almost NO rind and look, NO seeds.  It even seems to be "All Heart".  Yipeeeeee.  We put the portions back into the coldest part of our new truck fridge and it was almost frozen I had some this evening.
What a treat.
Not quite the same as having a watermelon in the backyard surrounded by friends and family, but a good treat none the less.
So Tony and I will be having watermelon to celebrate our country's birthday.  Hope you are having some too.

I LOVE watemelon and I LOVE these little ones! I've bought them many times - they are almost always truly seedless and the flavor is so delicious all the way through. Plus, like you said...there is room in the fridge for them!

I've never been into and H.E.B. - saw them down in Brownsville...now I'll have to go check one out.

Happy 4th of July!!

The ones in Laredo and McAllen have a SUSHI roller who does nothing but make the most gorgeous grocery store sushi ever. I always get some to eat after I put all the groceries away. Their calamari salad from the sushi bar is really gingery and tangy too. mmmmmmmm
